Not every home has it, but it would be a great addition to many. All you need to create it is a space. It could be an attic where you dump junk, or a basement, or a second garage for a car you know you can’t buy in the next five years. You won’t even have to spend a fortune to do up this space. But yes, you would have to have a wild imagination, random ideas and oodles of creativity. But what is it we are talking about? It is what we’d like to call a family room. Yes, the term is old fashioned, but wouldn’t you love to have a cozy place you can run to on cold winter evenings, and quietly sip coffee and leaf through a book? Or cuddle up with your sweetie on the couch, or play board games with your kids? We know you would, and we have a list of five things you can do to make your family room dream come true.
- Select a space. You need to make adjustments to generate what you want and all of this depends on the size and shape of the spare space you have in mind.
- The first thing you have to do is clear the space so you have a blank canvas to work on. Throw out any old furniture you are never going to use again. Get rid of that old typewriter your father hated anyway and your age old tricycle, the orange chair from your dorm and piles of Mills and Boon paperbacks.
- Now you have to do a bit of thinking. What do you want the room to look like? What do you want it to feel like? Settle on a style for the décor. It could be casual, chic, urban, romantic or gothic, though we wouldn’t recommend the last for the kind of space we have described.
- Once you are decided on that, make a list of things you would need. You should have a nice sofa or settee, preferably a thick, cushioned one, one or two chairs, ample floor space so you can move freely, and supplies for the kind of things you do as a family. for instance, if you are all into a certain TV show, you could have a TV set, DVDs of all seasons of the show, a coffee pot so you don’t run out of something to drink while you are watching it, and maybe a jar of chocolate chip cookies. For a family of foodies, small packs of ready to eats are a must while you plant yourselves in front of the TV. For anyone, a good idea is to have a few board games around, or craft supplies if you have small children and classics in literature you could never tire of.
- Of course the room has to feel cheerful and happy. Don’t use too many dark colors. Stick to happy yellows and bright oranges and lime greens and cool blues. Loads of pictures from magazines or newspapers on a soft board are going to look great.
Sounds like fun? To get started off spending quality time as a family every day of the year, you can work together on bringing the family room to life. Trust us, it is definitely going to bring you all closer
Remembering the backyard!
When most people think home improvement, they focus on the interior of their homes. Some take care of the outside in the sense that they get it painted or cleaned once every few years. But there are really very few people who put in any thought about beautifying parts of their houses that are visible to those on the outside, such as the porch, the backyard, the front lawn or even the garden. Yes, some people do neglect their gardens, leaving it in shambles when it could actually give a face lift to their homes.
There are ways of making the external spaces of your house look better and more inviting for you when you return home after a hard day at work. In fact, they will cut a better figure with people who visit your home for the first time. Just a little care and investment will ensure that the outside of your home looks as good as the inside. We’ll tell you how you can go about it simply and without too much effort.
Let’s talk about the backyard first, usually the most neglected space. Even if you don’t want to decorate it as such, you can make sure it’s sparkling clean all the time. This means sweeping it regularly, and washing it about once a week. You can put some potted plants here and there. The green will look aesthetically appealing, and it’s good for your eyes too. You can build a small enclosure for your pets in this area, which will give you something creative to do and make your backyard look nicer too.
There’s some more you can do with your porch, especially if it is large. In that case, adding a little light furniture is a good option. You don’t need to go over the top. Just a two-seater and a low table are enough. You can have them in wickerwork or cane, which means they will be inexpensive. If there are kids in the house, you could have a swing. Plants are a good idea for this space too. You must have a light fixed centrally on the ceiling, and a picture or two can liven things up.
As for your lawns, you should take pains to get them mowed as soon as they need some mowing. You can hire a gardener for this job, and you can include the task of trimming shrubbery and other undergrowth. You can take care of the watering yourself. A garden doesn’t need to have marble accessories and fountains all over the place to look good. Maintenance is key you can plant the flowers yourself. Choose a small variety. Roses and orchids in the same space make for a clash. But of course you can have daisies and bluebells together. The contrast will be pleasant rather than jarring. You have to use insecticides to keep your plants in top order. In a few months, you will be left the proud owner of a piece of paradise.
Home improvement
Home improvement often goes by another name, which you are probably more familiar with- home renovation. This process involves making changes to your existing home or extending it by adding spaces or structures. Converting your extra garage into a den for your teenage son could be a project in home improvement, as could ripping off that old rose print wallpaper off your bedroom walls and painting it a creamy white. Home improvement projects don’t need to be restricted to interiors. You could work on your garden, or lawn, even your backyard. All of that could be described as home improvement.
We will talk about how you can improve your home by working on the elements of comfort within it. One way of achieving this is by changing your HVAC inside out (HVAC includes heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems). You also have the option of retaining your old system and upgrading it, since it is more expensive to get a complete new system installed.
Next, you should look at plumbing and electrical systems. You may consider getting new plumbing lines, if yours are over two decades old. If you still want to make do with them, hire a professional plumber and get the lines cleaned thoroughly. This will get rid of deposits of waste and mineral salts that tend to clog the lines over the years. When this has been done, you will find that your immediate water supply functions more efficiently than ever before, and as a bonus, your bathrooms will stay cleaner and smell fresher all day long.
As for the electrical systems, you should get them checked for melted fuse wires and broken ends and loose contact points every so often, perhaps once in six months. Get any problems fixed without delay; you don’t want any fatal accidents. If you want a change in the way your home looks, a good idea is to get some new lights and put them in at vantage points through the house. You can have one that casts a glow over a nice picture on a span of empty wall in your living room. You can have a mini chandelier right over your dining table, if you have an exclusive dining area. You can get energy saver lights for use on regular days and switch on the concealed party lights on special evenings.
To make sure your house is as healthy as you, you must get your basement waterproofed. Once that is done, you can set aside your worries about draughts damaging your basement walls and lending them that blotchy, sad look.
You might get your bedrooms and baths soundproofed if you are one of the many people who hate being woken up from sleep by a huge crash in your neighbor’s porch, or jerked out of a reverie in a hot bath at the end of the day. This will set you back by a few hundred dollars, but in the end, the comfort you get in exchange for that, for decades if not for ever, is worth spending the money on. See what you need to do to get your home in ship shape!

A kid’s room should always look nice. After all, it’s where they sleep, where they carry out various activities, where they play and spend time with friends. Every child deserves a room that matches his personality, a room that has an effect on him. It’s never too early to plan your kid’s room, and if you want easy decoration tips for a child’s room, this article will tell you all you need to know.
Firstly, the most important thing is that you have to keep in mind your kid’s likings and disliking. Do incorporate him in the process of redecorating, take his opinions and ask him what he prefers. Firstly, you need to look at furniture, the basic furniture for a child’s room includes a bed, a table, a small table and a couple of chairs, a wardrobe or closet, and a couple of book-cases and cupboards for storage purposes. So if you buy just those items, you’re more or less ready to go. Do consult decorators and catalogs, as there are many child-friendly designs available today which your kid is sure to love.
Paint is also important. Paint the room in warm, vibrant colors to give your child a sense of ease and well-being. You could also have a mural on one wall. Ideally, you should choose a theme for the room. Common boys’ themes include football, sea, and action figures. Common girls’ themes include pink and white, Disney princesses, and flowers. Choose one that is appropriate for your child, and match some furniture, and some accessories to it. The room will automatically look better.
What is also important is proper utilization of space. The cupboards and bookcases should hold your child’s books and toys, and always encourage him to put them away after use. Accessorize your child’s room with photographs and frames. You could have a special stand-alone shelf for a few favorite toys; you might even place it right across the bed, so that it’s the first thing your child sees when he wakes up.
Do take care of the lighting, and perhaps it would be a prudent idea to have a night-side lamp, as sometimes children tend to get scared of the dark. Also pay attention to safety, make sure all the wires are covered and that no sockets are left open. Don’t put any glass items in the room, your child might accidentally break them and then hurt himself.
