Home improvement might refer to any kind of renovation and addition or alteration done to your home, and beautification of the space you live in, and spend most of your day in, is an integral part of the home improvement process. There are lots of ways you can change the whole look of spaces inside your house, be it the living area, or the bedrooms, or maybe the basement too. There are definitely no hard and fast rules on how you can create a better look for your home, and there is all the freedom to run away with your imagination and get adventurous. You are restricted only by your budget, though there is something for everyone. However, we have for you a set of basic ideas which you can build up on, to revamp any space in general, but your living room in particular.

This is a rule of thumb which works well for just about any room, but this one step can change the way your living room looks and feels. Paint the walls a different color. You can try a shade that is entirely different from what you had before, but stick to lighter hues if it is a small room. You can try darker colors in a larger space. If you really want a deep rosette or perhaps a burgundy, and your room is not spacey, you can keep that color restricted to the longest stretch of wall you have and have the other walls done in a contrasting shade of say, cream or beige. The idea is to do away with whatever colors you had before and get a new color scheme.

We don’t imagine many people can afford to throw away all their old furniture and get a new set, but you can make small changes to your existing things. For instance, if you have a rectangular coffee table, you can use your skills as a carpenter to get it shaped into a square. You could add a few chairs here and there, which won’t cost you too much money. You can fashion a low futon from an old bed, and a chaise lounge from your grandmother’s huge rocking chair.

To brighten up your living room on a low budget, change the upholstery. If you had light walls and darker curtains, you can shift to light soft furnishings with hints of an accent tone here and there. You could do soft honey curtains, checkered ones maybe, and get cushion covers in bright red. Sometimes, random cushions in a range of shapes, sizes and shades can go a long way in the transformation.

If you want an instant change, simply throw around knick knacks and accessories you picked up any odd time. A painting by your son can jazz up a plain wall, and your daughter’s figurine collection will look great in that tiny alcove. Add a few family photographs and a lampshade here, a crystal vase there, and you are ready to enjoy your new living room.

Not every home has it, but it would be a great addition to many. All you need to create it is a space. It could be an attic where you dump junk, or a basement, or a second garage for a car you know you can’t buy in the next five years. You won’t even have to spend a fortune to do up this space. But yes, you would have to have a wild imagination, random ideas and oodles of creativity. But what is it we are talking about? It is what we’d like to call a family room. Yes, the term is old fashioned, but wouldn’t you love to have a cozy place you can run to on cold winter evenings, and quietly sip coffee and leaf through a book? Or cuddle up with your sweetie on the couch, or play board games with your kids? We know you would, and we have a list of five things you can do to make your family room dream come true.

Select a space. You need to make adjustments to generate what you want and all of this depends on the size and shape of the spare space you have in mind.

The first thing you have to do is clear the space so you have a blank canvas to work on. Throw out any old furniture you are never going to use again. Get rid of that old typewriter your father hated anyway and your age old tricycle, the orange chair from your dorm and piles of Mills and Boon paperbacks.

Now you have to do a bit of thinking. What do you want the room to look like? What do you want it to feel like? Settle on a style for the décor. It could be casual, chic, urban, romantic or gothic, though we wouldn’t recommend the last for the kind of space we have described.

Once you are decided on that, make a list of things you would need. You should have a nice sofa or settee, preferably a thick, cushioned one, one or two chairs, ample floor space so you can move freely, and supplies for the kind of things you do as a family. for instance, if you are all into a certain TV show, you could have a TV set, DVDs of all seasons of the show, a coffee pot so you don’t run out of something to drink while you are watching it, and maybe a jar of chocolate chip cookies. For a family of foodies, small packs of ready to eats are a must while you plant yourselves in front of the TV. For anyone, a good idea is to have a few board games around, or craft supplies if you have small children and classics in literature you could never tire of.

Of course the room has to feel cheerful and happy. Don’t use too many dark colors. Stick to happy yellows and bright oranges and lime greens and cool blues. Loads of pictures from magazines or newspapers on a soft board are going to look great.

Sounds like fun? To get started off spending quality time as a family every day of the year, you can work together on bringing the family room to life. Trust us, it is definitely going to bring you all closer

When most people think home improvement, they focus on the interior of their homes. Some take care of the outside in the sense that they get it painted or cleaned once every few years. But there are really very few people who put in any thought about beautifying parts of their houses that are visible to those on the outside, such as the porch, the backyard, the front lawn or even the garden. Yes, some people do neglect their gardens, leaving it in shambles when it could actually give a face lift to their homes.

There are ways of making the external spaces of your house look better and more inviting for you when you return home after a hard day at work. In fact, they will cut a better figure with people who visit your home for the first time. Just a little care and investment will ensure that the outside of your home looks as good as the inside. We’ll tell you how you can go about it simply and without too much effort.

Let’s talk about the backyard first, usually the most neglected space. Even if you don’t want to decorate it as such, you can make sure it’s sparkling clean all the time. This means sweeping it regularly, and washing it about once a week. You can put some potted plants here and there. The green will look aesthetically appealing, and it’s good for your eyes too. You can build a small enclosure for your pets in this area, which will give you something creative to do and make your backyard look nicer too.

There’s some more you can do with your porch, especially if it is large. In that case, adding a little light furniture is a good option. You don’t need to go over the top. Just a two-seater and a low table are enough. You can have them in wickerwork or cane, which means they will be inexpensive. If there are kids in the house, you could have a swing. Plants are a good idea for this space too. You must have a light fixed centrally on the ceiling, and a picture or two can liven things up.

As for your lawns, you should take pains to get them mowed as soon as they need some mowing. You can hire a gardener for this job, and you can include the task of trimming shrubbery and other undergrowth. You can take care of the watering yourself. A garden doesn’t need to have marble accessories and fountains all over the place to look good. Maintenance is key you can plant the flowers yourself. Choose a small variety. Roses and orchids in the same space make for a clash. But of course you can have daisies and bluebells together. The contrast will be pleasant rather than jarring. You have to use insecticides to keep your plants in top order. In a few months, you will be left the proud owner of a piece of paradise.

Home improvement often goes by another name, which you are probably more familiar with- home renovation. This process involves making changes to your existing home or extending it by adding spaces or structures. Converting your extra garage into a den for your teenage son could be a project in home improvement, as could ripping off that old rose print wallpaper off your bedroom walls and painting it a creamy white. Home improvement projects don’t need to be restricted to interiors. You could work on your garden, or lawn, even your backyard. All of that could be described as home improvement.

We will talk about how you can improve your home by working on the elements of comfort within it. One way of achieving this is by changing your HVAC inside out (HVAC includes heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems). You also have the option of retaining your old system and upgrading it, since it is more expensive to get a complete new system installed.

Next, you should look at plumbing and electrical systems. You may consider getting new plumbing lines, if yours are over two decades old. If you still want to make do with them, hire a professional plumber and get the lines cleaned thoroughly. This will get rid of deposits of waste and mineral salts that tend to clog the lines over the years. When this has been done, you will find that your immediate water supply functions more efficiently than ever before, and as a bonus, your bathrooms will stay cleaner and smell fresher all day long.

As for the electrical systems, you should get them checked for melted fuse wires and broken ends and loose contact points every so often, perhaps once in six months. Get any problems fixed without delay; you don’t want any fatal accidents. If you want a change in the way your home looks, a good idea is to get some new lights and put them in at vantage points through the house. You can have one that casts a glow over a nice picture on a span of empty wall in your living room. You can have a mini chandelier right over your dining table, if you have an exclusive dining area. You can get energy saver lights for use on regular days and switch on the concealed party lights on special evenings.

To make sure your house is as healthy as you, you must get your basement waterproofed. Once that is done, you can set aside your worries about draughts damaging your basement walls and lending them that blotchy, sad look.

You might get your bedrooms and baths soundproofed if you are one of the many people who hate being woken up from sleep by a huge crash in your neighbor’s porch, or jerked out of a reverie in a hot bath at the end of the day. This will set you back by a few hundred dollars, but in the end, the comfort you get in exchange for that, for decades if not for ever, is worth spending the money on. See what you need to do to get your home in ship shape!

Whether you are single or live with your significant other, whether you are a student, a professional or anyone in between, whether you live in a studio apartment or a Victorian mansion, your bedroom is the one place you could describe as your haven, your hideout, or your sanctuary. It is probably the one place you look forward to returning to at the end of a long day, so you can relax and forget all the stress you have been through in the course of the day and do just what you feel like.

Since your bedroom is where you do things you love most, and where you catch up with yourself, it is a good idea to do it up so it is best suited for your kind of activity. At the same time, it should be high on the feel good factor. Most importantly, it should be comfortable, so you don’t wake up each morning with a slight but nagging ache in your back. So how do you get the right look for your bedroom? Here are the ten top ways to decorate yours.

You have to have a fantastic bed. You should get a size that is the largest that will fit into your room and yet not seem obtrusive, or take up so much space that you have to grit your teeth every time you want to move around in your room. A soft, springy mattress laid on your bed will ensure you can sleep comfortably.

As for other furniture, you probably want a wardrobe, a study unit, a dressing unit and perhaps a cushy chair or a bean bag to lounge about in. You would also need storage space, and a place for your own television or stereo.

You need storage more than anything you might possibly want. You can go for a bed that comes with a large, flat drawer at the bottom. You can put in spare bed sheets and blankets and pillows in this space during the day. Get drawers inside your closet where you can store innerwear, socks, shoes, jewelry and make up. Your TV cabinet should have a rack for your CDs and DVDs. You can put your books in the same unit. To keep your room clean and clutter free, dust everyday.

Don’t buy anything that catches your eye for your bedroom. Some open space will allow you to stretch out on the floor when you are in the mood.

To keep your bedroom clean and clutter free, dust everyday.

Think contrasts. Don’t try and match everything. You can get curtains and cushion covers in a bright tone, and stick to a basic, earthier shade for sheets and soft furniture.

Try covering a wall with movie posters.

You could have prints of famous paintings too.

Family photographs are always a hit.

Lastly, have a few items you love scattered about your bedroom. It could be a bunch of letters from your partner, or a special photo, or a scented candle in a bag of potpourri, these things are going to make your room your home

We all want our houses to look clean. They should relieve us of our stress, make us forget the difficulties of everyday life, and induce us to relax. They should look inviting and peaceful, also appealing. In this article, we give you some home improvement tips for the house.

First, we take the bedroom – ideally you shouldn’t place the TV or any entertainment center there. This inhibits your sleep. Instead, keep it in the living area. Don’t keep your computer in the bedroom either, for the very same reason. The bedroom’s focus is on sleeping and relaxing. When it comes to paint, paint your bedroom in light shades like banana yellow or sea green. Put up colorful curtains that add a touch of class to your room. Ensure that you have two side tables, with side lamps. Look at the lighting; combine general lighting with mood lighting. Keep aside a special shelf for putting up photo frames and knick-knacks. This would decorate your room and give a personal touch, besides making it look inviting.

Now the kitchen. It should be more than just a place to cook and eat. Brighten it up as well, use colorful fridge magnets, and buy some bright cutlery and crockery. Add fresh flowers to the table every day. Make sure all your appliances are clean. You could buy identical containers for different spice, and then use colorful labels like Thyme, Rosemary, Oregano, etc. This would make your kitchen look extremely unique. Set the table with unique looking table mats, and make sure the upholstery of the chairs is in good condition. If it’s not, get them re-upholstered.

And what about the bathroom? Well, this room should be kept clean at all times. Here too, you could add fresh flowers every day, near the basin. Make sure all the faucets are working properly. You could perhaps put up a colorful picture right above the toilet. Make sure your curtains and bright and vibrant looking. You could add some artificial creeper to give a natural look. And when it comes to the living room, you can totally use your imagination. Buy a nice entertainment unit for the TV, DVD player, etc. Use a coffee table for putting magazines and cups of tea or coffee. Add some bean bags and lots of cushions for an eclectic look.

See, home improvement is extremely easy; it doesn’t need to be hard. Just use your imagination, explore the various possibilities, and you are sure to come up with lots of ideas that you can use. The trick is to put in what you like and to trust your own instincts.

Select light-blocking window treatments. Even though the sun isn’t out, plenty of light can sneak into the bedroom from outside, disrupting your sleep patterns. Keeping the room as dark as possible is especially important for people whose work schedules require them to sleep during the day.

If you need a little light to sleep comfortably, consider adding a couple of nightlights or a dimmer switch rather than sleeping with a lamp on all the time.

Loud pipes might be waking everyone in the house when one person makes a bathroom visit in the middle of the night. Look for the cause of any clanging and banging, particularly in a bathroom that is adjacent to a bedroom.

Make sure doors and windows are solid and secure, with no drafts or rattles.

Use an air purifier or humidifier to keep air quality at its best. Allergens and excessively dry air can interrupt sleep and make waking up unpleasant, too. As a bonus, many machines create a white noise that drowns out other, distracting sounds.

Organize closets and keep clothing and other personal items in their places. A chaotic, messy room is stressful to the mind. Don’t try to fall asleep with your eyes darting around the room, spotting shoes and clothes scattered all over the floor. Sleep well, knowing that everything is in its place.

In today’s times, making the maximum use of space is very important. You need to keep in mind the area of your space, and then make proper use of it. Ensure that no space is left unutilized. We give you some simple tips to make the maximum use of space. Firstly, you can use open shelves as opposed to a chest of drawers, as these can accommodate many more books, CDs and magazines. Secondly, try using an elevated loft bed, this makes more use of vertical room space. You can put some brightly colored quilts and throws over the bed, to make it look inviting and elegant. Third, use special containers to keep things under your bed – things you may not need on a regular basis. Often the space under the bed goes unutilized – this shouldn’t be so, if there’s space, make use of it!

Now what about all the vertical wall space that is going to waste, in your room? Well, you can add a tall bookcase or a set of shelves, to accommodate things like books or stuffed toys, or even figurines. Make maximum use of filing cabinets and desktop organizers to keep all your things in order – this will help you organize your space and make it look neater, therefore more presentable. What about the storage trunk at the corner of the room that is going to waste? Well, you can fold a pretty cloth over it, and use it as a corner for displaying photo frames. When it comes to the seating area, you can add small stools and suchlike so that more people can sit – that way you don’t need to put in bulky chairs.

Yes, it’s very important to use all the unutilized space that is going to waste. That way, you can reduce the domestic chaos. In fact, you might even consider building a cupboard under the staircase, which you can use as a broom closet, or use it for storing old books, CDs, or even winter clothing. And it’s not just the staircase – you can use basic carpentry and imagination for almost any space that you see is lying bare. Ideally, you should get rid of all the stuff you don’t need, and keep the necessary stuff. So many of us keep stuff we’re never going to use again – what’s the point? May as well get rid of it, and use the space for something else.

The important thing is to be creative and play around with the endless possibilities.

Your room is so much more than your room. It’s where you spend time, be by yourself, mull over the deeper issues of life. It’s your own personal sanctuary. So it is important that you personalize your room as much as possible, so that it looks great and looks inviting and appealing. So the best thing is to do is follow your own tastes. In this article, we shall give you some basic tips to personalize your room.

The first thing to do, when personalizing your room, is to de-clutter it. Get rid of all the stuff you have accumulated over the years that you don’t need, or don’t want. Get rid of all of it. You will automatically see that your room looks much cleaner. Now you can decide what to do with it, and how you want to personalize it. Now make it different. Make it look unique. What do you do? Well, you could add different tiling, or different wallpaper – something totally unconventional. All you need to do is add some visual accessory, and your room will look much better.

Now we come to the issue of the color palette. Mix and blend the colors in such a way that the room looks unique. For instance, you can choose one color and make that the dominant one, and then use the other colors as secondary shades. For instance, if you use red as the dominant color in your bedroom, you can use a red bedspread, red curtains, and a red edge to the mirror; perhaps paint the back of one door red. And then use other colors like pale yellow or ivory for the pillows, table, etc. do remember to choose the fabrics wisely. Choose the most comfortable fabrics that you find, you might even consider putting in silk sheets and rich cotton rugs.

Yes, it is always important to put in a personal touch. You can personalize your room with colorful curtains – as they add a lovely warm feeling, and give a touch of class, try to get luxurious curtains on a budget. You can also personalize your room with personal knick-knacks. Add some figurines and collectibles you might have picked up in your travels. If you have many medals, drape them over your vanity mirror. Put up some framed photographs of you with friends and family. You might even consider putting some stuffed toys on the bed.

We all use the living room for various purposes. Sometimes it’s used to entertain guests. Sometimes it doubles up as a bedroom when those guests. Sometimes it’s used as a meeting venue. Sometimes we even just hang around there and watch TV or read. Therefore it comes as no surprise that the living room should be decorated well, should look warm and inviting with a unique décor at all times.

Firstly, you need to put in all the basic furniture for your living room – sofa set, sofa, game table, lamps, coffee table, stereo system, and perhaps a bookcase if you want. Now the next thing is to decide on a focal point, something that is meant to attract most of the attention. A focal point also makes the efforts of decoration that much easier. So what do you use as a focal point? A piece of furniture? A furnishing? Or even a painting? Perhaps a fireplace? The choice is entirely yours. Now you need to arrange the furniture accordingly – now remember that furniture placement is a basic art, so you need to put in your own unique style to achieve the look that you want. Do make maximum use of your imagination and creativity.

While placing the furniture, you need to keep a few basic things in mind. Firstly, identify all the walkways, and keep those paths clear. Next, don’t make the mistake of thinking that all the big or major pieces of furniture should have their backs up against a wall. Often this looks clumsy. Third, if it’s a big room, break it up into two main activity areas. Also, you should make sure that the windows and doors aren’t blocked, and finally, avoid cluttering up your living room. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the more pieces of furniture you have, the better your room will look. That’s not the case at all. Often, a little goes a long way, so you need to figure out what look works best.

Now comes accessorizing – make your living room look more personal. Put in some family photo frames. Put in a couple of brightly decorated mirrors. You can even set aside a couple of shelves for putting some figurines and statuettes. Include a rug on the floor, and soft colorful cushions on the sofa. Visit the nearby flea market to pick up some great decorating stuff at great bargains.

The important thing to remember while decorating a living room is that one should never ever go overboard. Remember, a little goes a long way, so make maximum effort, and consult decorating magazines and books if required.

Work is an integral part of all our lives. We work, and we earn money. But the work-station that we work at should be so much more than that; it shouldn’t be drab and boring. In this article, we give you some tips on how to brighten up your work-station.

First things first – you need to organize it properly. Keep aside a separate section for bills, a separate section for important documents, and so on. Learn to categorize all your paperwork; you will automatically see that your work-station is looking much better. In fact, there are special filers available for this very purpose. Invest in a few good ones; they will come to great use. You would be surprised at how much keeping a desktop or work-station clutter-free makes a difference. Now comes the aspect of color. You would be surprised to know that color is not just used for decorative purposes, but also for creating the proper mood and bringing about a healthier emotional mind. Sometimes bright white hurts the eyes, so you might go for colors like pale yellow, or lavender. Such colors will not distract you, yet will keep you soothed during the day.

Now comes lighting. Of course lighting is very important to any work-station. You need to have proper lighting, not so bright that it hurts your eyes, but not so dim either that you can’t see anything. A good suggestion would be to not depend on just a single source of lighting, rather to light the work-station’s perimeter and not just the surface. Use soft lighting and you could even use a hanging light of some sort that is not just functional but adds to the décor.

You can also use bright funky stationery products to give your work-station that extra touch. Use bright pens, colorful erasers, keep a couple of highlighters handy, etc. the trick is to improvise as much as possible, and to use your own mind and own tastes in decorating. You also need drawer organizers to keep the paperwork in your drawers in order.

And now for the little decorative additions – put in a couple of photo frames of you and family, put in a colorful themed calendar, you might even put in a novelty mouse pad! Plus, there’s always the option of using candles, flowers, etc. all this gives your work-station a much more personalized look.

You see, with a little imagination and some classy taste, you can ensure that your work-station looks extremely bright and inviting, and you will find that working has now become a pleasure!
